A man has been charged in connection with the attempted murder of a police officer in Greenock.

An officer received stab wounds in a disturbance in the East India Harbour area of the town early on Sunday morning.

A man made off in a dinghy following the incident, and was later arrested at Rhu Marina near Helensburgh – across the River Clyde from Greenock.

A 31-year-old man has since been arrested and charged and is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

The officer has since received treatment at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where he remains in a stable condition.

Police say their officers were responding to a report of a concern for a man and their officer was assaulted once he was traced.

"Courage and bravery"

Superintendent Emma MacKay, said: "The officer and his colleagues showed incredible bravery and professionalism during this difficult and challenging incident and I would like to thank them for their efforts.

"The incident was contained with no further risk to the public.

"We'd like to thank our emergency services colleagues and partner agencies who were on the scene and provided vital assistance during the incident.

“Our thoughts are with the officer, his family and colleagues at this time. We will continue to offer them all the necessary support.”

A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and the man is due to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court on Monday, 5 August, 2025.
