The new regulations aim to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility

From today - new laws banning pavement parking will be enforced across Argyll and Bute, which could see drivers hit with £100 fines.

It is the latest council area to implement a comprehensive ban on pavement parking, double parking, and parking at dropped kerbs, aligning with the Transport (Scotland) Act 2019.

This initiative seeks to improve road safety and accessibility for vulnerable pedestrians, including individuals with visual impairments, wheelchair users, and parents with young children.

To effectively enforce these new regulations, the council has expanded its team of wardens by creating two additional positions—one based in Mid Argyll, Kintyre and the Islands, and another in Helensburgh and Lomond.

These wardens are responsible for monitoring compliance and issuing Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) to offenders.

The standard fine for violations is £100, reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days.

The Transport (Scotland) Act 2019, which received Parliamentary assent and came into force on 11th December 2023, grants local authorities the power to prohibit and penalise pavement parking, double parking, and parking at dropped kerbs.

These measures are designed to prevent hazardous situations where pedestrians are forced onto roadways due to obstructed pavements.

Research indicates that such parking practices significantly impact the daily lives of many residents, particularly those with mobility challenges.

In addition to enhancing pedestrian safety, the ban addresses the financial burden associated with pavement repairs.

Pavements are not engineered to support the weight of vehicles, and parking on them can lead to substantial damage, necessitating costly repairs.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to utilise designated parking areas and adhere to the new regulations.

The council has also provided guidance on its website to inform the public about the specifics of the ban and available parking alternatives.
