A man who forced his way into a home in Tilbury and attacked the occupant with a lamp has been jailed for nine years.

33-year-old Josh Jerrum, from St Chads Road, knocked on the door of a property in Elgar Gardens in the early hours of the 24th of October 2025. Jerrum forced his way inside when the occupant opened the door. He demanded cash and valuables before leaving his victim with a serious head injury.

Officers attended the scene with paramedics. They then launched their investigation, finding forensic evidence that quickly linked Jerrum to the scene. On the 19th of November, he was located, arrested and charged with attempted robbery and causing grievous bodily harm without intent.

At Basildon Crown Court on the 1st of May this year, he was found guilty of attempted robbery and causing grievous bodily harm. He was found not guilty of a third charge of possession of a bladed article.

At the same court Jerrum was sentenced to nine years in prison for attempted robbery, and 16 months concurrently for the GBH.

At the same hearing Jerrum was sentenced to 12 months in prison, to run concurrently, after pleading guilty to another burglary on the 17th of September 2025 where he'd stolen cigarettes, wine and cash from a shop in Montreal Road, Tilbury.

Speaking after the hearing Temporary Detective Sergeant Ed Mitchell said: "Jerrum was a remorseless and violent repeat offender, and the district is a safer place with him jailed."

"We recognise the huge impact his crimes, invading innocent people's homes and robbing their places of work, have on these victims. It's why we work so hard to identify those responsible, arrest them and ensure they face justice in front of a jury."

PC Harry Clark added: "Our work in the Criminal Investigation Department goes hand-in-hand with the proactive work of our local officers, gathering intelligence and deterring would-be offenders in our communities, and all helps to make Essex a safer place."
