Emergency department staff may be having fish and chips for dinner tonight, as they have been given £2,000 worth of food vouchers from a Westcliff chip shop.

Bradley Oldham, owner of Oldham’s of Westcliff, served up the vouchers in appreciation for the Emergency Department (ED) staff and a thanks for all they do for the local community.

The £20 vouchers have been shared among nurses, doctors and support staff.

Carrie Dixon, Head of Nursing for ED, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Bradley and his family for thinking of our team. Working in the ED is fast-paced and demanding, and gestures like this make a real difference and give us a real boost.”

Bradley has done this before, in 2022 and 2023, and says we should recognise the work that hospital staff put in.

"Where we are in Westcliff, and being there seven days a week, we see ambulance crews coming in. They all do such a good job for us, and we don't really recognise it as much as we maybe should.

"I would love to think that everyone would use the vouchers and have a decent hot meal at the end of their shift or starting a shift.

"If it puts a smile on someone, or ay of the nurses' faces, then we've done our job.

"And if they really enjoy their chips, and their battered sausage, and curry sauce or whatever else they have with it, then all the better."

He also said: “Being local to the hospital we often get customers coming in to buy fish and chips for themselves or relatives. We all know how much pressure hospital staff are under every day, especially in the ED, so I wanted to give something back to say thanks. This little gift hopefully lifts spirits for a moment, and everyone loves chips!”
