Teens praised for response to 'tragic' West Mearsea beach incident
A girl and a woman died after the tide came in unexpectedly
In the aftermath of a tragic incident on Mersea Island, which claimed the lives of a teenage girl and a woman, local teenagers have been commended for their courageous efforts in aiding the rescue operation.
The incident occurred near Seaview Avenue when the tide unexpectedly came in, causing several people to be in difficulty on a sandbank.
Carl Powling, a councillor for Colchester Council, revealed that his daughter was one of three teenage waitresses from a local café who sprang into action.
“Members of the public witnessed it, called the emergency services, helped start to pull people out,” Powling said, adding that the waitresses assisted in directing police and giving first aid at the scene.
According to Powling, these teens had impressive composure, even preventing people from filming the distressing situation.
The teens coordinated efforts until the coastguard and emergency responders arrived with a "phenomenal speed."
The community remains in mourning, with Vicar Jo Parrott opening the parish church for reflection and expressing gratitude to all responders involved.
Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher encouraged witnesses who have not yet provided information to reach out, stressing the importance of understanding the circumstances and events that led to the tragedy.
