Staff at the University of Essex are striking today in a row over cuts to jobs and services, UNISON has said.

It's the first time admissions advisors, IT technicians, admin workers and other professional services staff have walked out during the university's restructuring programme.

They are striking for a day today.

The union says its members are taking action over proposals that form part of a cost-cutting drive launched last December, which aims to reduce the workforce by around 400 posts. UNISON says the £24 million of cuts, which have already forced the closure of the university's Southend campus, will hit the quality of students' education and the support available to them.

Staff say they've been left with no choice but to strike after university leaders refused to properly engage with them or listen to suggestions to minimise job losses.

The strike is timed to coincide with the university's annual 'court' meeting today, where the vice-chancellor highlights achievements over the past year.

UNISON regional organiser Wayne Instone said: "Staff want to be getting everything ready to welcome students back for the new academic year.

"Instead, they're being forced to strike in a last attempt to stop the destruction of their university.

"It doesn't have to be this way. All the vice-chancellor needs to do is show staff a little respect, start consulting meaningfully on proposals and work with us to find a way out of this mess."

The University of Essex said: "The University of Essex is committed to making sure any industrial action affects our students as little as possible.

"We've engaged fully with union leaders since beginning our structural change programme in December 2025, and their feedback has helped shape our decisions.

"The closure of our Southend Campus this summer and reduction in staffing over the past year to match our current student numbers have involved difficult choices, and we recognise the impact this process has had on colleagues.

"Universities across the UK are facing significant financial pressures. The actions we have taken are designed to put Essex on a sustainable footing and protect its future for our students, staff and wider community."
