Uninsured vehicles and illegal e-scooters seized in police operation in Thurrock

Drivers using uninsured vehicles and illegal privately-owned e‑scooters have been removed from Essex’s roads as part of a targeted enforcement operation.
Officers from Essex Police's Roads Policing Unit were in the Thurrock district on 12th June.
They were carrying out 'Operation Scalis' - a campaign focussed on uninsured driving and dangerous behaviours behind the wheel.
The operation saw 16 uninsured vehicles seized, 4 privately owned e-scooters seized, 23 drivers reported for driving licence offences and no insurance, 1 driver reported for no vehicle tax, 20 traffic offence reports, and 1 disqualified driver reported.
Essex Police are warning that e-scooter riders are in some cases unaware of the law that says they can't be used legally on public roads, pavements or other public spaces.
The force says they can only be used on private land as they can be dangerous on public roads.
They also say that driving any vehicle without insurance is illegal and dangerous.
During the operation, 20 traffic offence reports were filed, with behaviours noted including speeding, drink or drug driving, using a phone at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt, and careless driving.
Operation Scalis is part of Essex Police's ongoing work with partners to target drivers who pose the greatest risk by removing unsafe and uninsured vehicles to prevent collisions before they happen and educate drivers.
