Two people arrested following the death of a 12-year-old boy in Brentwood remain in custody as detectives continue their investigation.
Emergency services were called to Ashwells Road in Pilgrims Hatch at 5.40pm on Sunday after a vehicle collided with the boy, leaving him with critical injuries.
Despite the efforts of paramedics and medical staff, he later died.
A 15-year-old boy and a 43-year-old man, both from the Pilgrims Hatch area, were arrested on suspicion of murder.
Essex Police said their detention was extended overnight and officers have now secured a magistrates' warrant allowing them to remain in custody for further questioning.
Detective Chief Inspector Greg Wood said investigators have been working "around the clock" to build a full picture of what happened.
He said the inquiry has involved reviewing extensive CCTV footage and gathering evidence from people in the area, adding that the investigation is complex and ongoing.
The boy's family continues to be supported by specialist officers.
Chief Inspector Terry Fisher urged people to avoid speculation online and to respect the privacy of the grieving family.
