Fire crews worked through the night to bring a large fire under control at a recycling centre on Station Road, East Tilbury.

The blaze, which broke out yesterday evening (30 October), involved a significant quantity of mixed scrap metal and produced thick smoke visible across the area.

Residents and businesses were advised to keep windows and doors closed while firefighters tackled the flames.

Crews from Basildon, Corringham, Grays and Orsett were called to the scene, with the public urged to avoid the area as emergency services worked to make it safe.

By 10.50pm, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the fire was “surrounded and under control.”

A specialist crane was used to move scrap metal, allowing crews to access and extinguish remaining hotspots.

Although smoke levels had reduced by late evening, the fire service warned that some smoke might remain visible while work continued to fully extinguish the fire.

Four fire engines remained at the site overnight, with firefighters expected to stay on scene into the early hours to ensure the area was made safe.

No injuries have been reported, and there is currently no wider impact on the surrounding area.

Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid Station Road until operations are fully complete.
