Thurrock smokers encouraged to quit this October with free support available
Stoptober offers residents a chance to quit smoking with the help of Thurrock Council's services
Thurrock Council is urging local smokers to participate in Stoptober, the national campaign running throughout October that encourages individuals to quit smoking.
Stoptober, which encourages millions of people across England to give quitting a go each year, aims to reduce smoking-related illness and deaths. Evidence suggests those who quit smoking for 28 days are five times more likely to quit for good.
Thurrock residents can access the council’s Stop Smoking Service for free professional support, including one-to-one assistance for up to 12 weeks, personalised quit plans, and advice to help manage cravings and triggers. Additional support may include nicotine replacement therapy, vape kits or prescribed medication, subject to availability.
Residents who successfully quit smoking for 12 weeks with Thurrock Council’s Health Trainers can receive a free two-month Impulse Leisure membership worth £150.
Cllr Willoughby, Cabinet Member for Adult Health & Housing Services, stated:
“Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, but nobody should feel they have to do it alone.
“Stoptober is a great opportunity to give quitting a go, and here in Thurrock there is free, practical support available to help residents every step of the way.
“If you’ve tried to quit before, please don’t be discouraged. Every attempt counts and can bring you closer to quitting for good.
“Whether you’re quitting for your health, your family or your future, I would encourage you to make this October the month you take that next step.”
The campaign also highlights the misconception that smoking helps people manage stress, with evidence showing that quitting can improve mental wellbeing, lift mood and reduce anxiety over time.
