Two years on from the Nottingham attacks, a group of friends from Essex are taking on a huge challenge in memory of one of the victims.

Grace O'Malley Kumar was one of three people killed in June 2023, she died trying to fight the attacker off her friend Barnaby Webber.

Some of her former team mates from at Old Loughtonians Hockey Club in Chigwell are taking on the Three Peaks Challenge. Over 24 hours, they’ll climb Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England, and Snowdon in Wales.

The group, Faye, Embo, Ogles, Tash, Leiper, Lisa and Chels, have named their challenge the “Purple Three Peaks”, a nod to the colour of their club kit and a reference to a quote from Grace that’s now proudly displayed in their changing room: “I’ll always be purple at heart.”

Their goal is to raise as much as possible for the Grace O’Malley-Kumar Foundation, which supports causes including youth sport, education, and community projects. The group originally wanted to raised £6,000 but have collected more than £7,500 in donations.

Hannah Leiper is one of those taking part: "I think what will keep us going a lot of the time is talking about Grace on the walk because I think when the times get tough that's what we're going to have to remember, why we're doing it. We have so many hilarious memories with Grace, I mean she was definitely the one that kept us laughing."

The Purple Three Peaks challenge gets underway on Friday (13 June).
