Overnight street lights to be turned back on in Castle Point after more than a decade
The overnight street lighting will be reinstated by the end of October
Overnight street lights will be turned back on in Castle Point after a public consultation resulted in them being reinstated.
The lights were previously turned off in February 2014.
83% of 3,887 residents were in favour of keeping the lights on overnight, with stated concerns over crime prevention, personal safety, and visibility.
It will be reintroduced between 1am and 5am, with the Borough funding the costs during these hours.
Councillor Stephen Mountford, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “The consultation results are clear. Our residents want overnight lighting restored, and we will act on that feedback. This decision reflects our commitment to delivering on our election promises and consulting with our residents and ensuring that Castle Point remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone, both day and night.”
Castle Point Borough Council will now fund the lighting and have told Essex County Council to leave the lights on all night by the end of October.
