Southend survivor urges others to speak out as abuser jailed
Man sentenced to 13 years for historic sexual offences
A survivor of non-recent sexual abuse has voiced her relief after seeing her abuser jailed for offences committed in the 1970s and 1980s.
Garry Turnidge, 71, from Montgomery Avenue, Lowestoft, pleaded guilty to 13 child sexual offences, including nine counts of indecent assault, one count of administering a drug with intent to commit an indictable offence, and one count of taking an indecent image of a child.
Police arrested Turnidge after finding him in possession of an indecent video of a child and a prohibited image.
On 15th June, Basildon Crown Court sentenced him to 13 years in prison, alongside a lifetime registration on the sex offenders list and an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
H2: Survivor's Message to Others
The survivor, who no longer resides in Essex, emphasised the importance of speaking out, regardless of how much time has passed.
"The support I received from Essex Police played an important role in helping me seek justice," she said.
She urged others to find someone they trust to confide in, whether that is a family member, friend, or professional.
"My experience with Essex Police was extremely positive. The officer was kind and supportive, helping me believe a positive outcome was possible," she said.
H2: Police Commitment
Detective Constable Chelsie Stamford, who led the investigation, praised the survivor's bravery: "I am glad that the perpetrator of her abuse has finally been held accountable.
"I wish to let other survivors of non-recent sexual abuse know that no matter how many years have passed since the abuse occurred, Essex Police will always conduct a thorough investigation and seek justice."
