Southend Armed Forces Day parade cancelled due to extreme weather
A shortened open-air Service of Thanksgiving will still be held at Victoria Plaza
Southend-on-Sea City Council has announced changes to this Saturday’s Armed Forces Day event due to a Met Office Weather Warning predicting temperatures of up to 32°C.
In response to the forecast and prioritising safety, the planned parade on Southend High Street will not occur on 27th June.
However, a shortened Service of Thanksgiving will still be held at Victoria Plaza at the head of the High Street at 10:45am.
The event aims to honour the Armed Forces while ensuring the wellbeing of participants, veterans, and the public.
The decision to cancel the parade was made after careful consideration of the risks posed by extreme heat, especially for older participants and those in ceremonial attire.
The Mayor of Southend explained the importance of recognising service personnel through Armed Forces Day and stressed the necessity of prioritising safety during the forecasted high temperatures.
While disappointed by the parade cancellation, city officials are pleased the community can still demonstrate respect and support through the revised service.
Attendees are encouraged to remain hydrated, wear appropriate clothing and sun protection, and adhere to guidance from event stewards.
