Essex Police have been given enhanced stop and search powers in Southend following reports of antisocial behaviour.

The force say there was a large gathering in Chalkwell Park yesterday evening (16 June) where people were setting off fireworks. Three people have been arrested.

Acting Inspector Robert Chapman said: “We’re introducing this Section 60 order as an extra response to this evening’s disturbances. It provides us with the powers needed to stop and search people in the area.

“This action isn’t about stopping people going about their business or meeting up with friends, it’s simply about making sure everyone can feel safe where they live and work.”

The Section 60 order is in place until 9am Tuesday (17 June).
