A mum from Saffron Walden has spoken this week, after the man who sexually assaulted her young daughter was jailed for more than six years.
Charles Benson-Clark, 30, was arrested in September 2022 after inappropriate messages were discovered on the victim’s phone.
The investigation by Essex Police revealed Benson-Clark had engaged in sexual activity with the victim on multiple occasions. He refused to answer questions when initially interviewed by officers but was later charged.
At Chelmsford Crown Court, he admitted four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, including two counts of penetrative sexual activity.
On Friday 21st November 2025, the court sentenced Benson-Clark, who is currently at HMP Chelmsford, to six years and six months behind bars. He was also given an indefinite restraining order and a 10-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO).
Investigators pay tribute to victim and family
Investigating officer Detective Constable George Lakey highlighted the significance of the victim and her mum's bravery throughout the case.
“I want to pay tribute to the victim and her mum for their bravery and tenacity during what I understand was an incredibly stressful time.
“I hope this sentence gives them some closure.
“Benson-Clark’s predatory behaviour was abhorrent. He knew his victim was underage, he was manipulative and was only interested in himself throughout.
“I hope this sentence encourages others to come forward and report any offending to us. We treat all reports of sexual offences extremely seriously and will thoroughly investigate any allegation made to us.”
Mum vows to help others after justice
Speaking after the sentencing, the victim’s mum said the crime had deeply affected their family but that achieving justice was a step toward moving forward.
“It was extremely challenging at times, going through it all took its toll on us, but I’m glad that justice has been served and my daughter’s voice has been heard.
“There is no magic wand. The impact has been far-reaching and getting justice will help as we move forward.”
She expressed gratitude for the support of CARA (Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse), mentioning their counsellor’s impactful guidance during the process.
She added, “My child did not feel like she could tell me what was happening to her due to his manipulative actions and that’s something I want to help change.
“I don’t want anyone else’s child to go through something like this, and I hope to find a way of supporting others going forward.”
