Body of rare whale washes up on Essex beach
Authorities advise public to avoid Canvey Island shore where whale carcass has been discovered
Authorities are urging people to keep away from the seafront on Canvey Island after a whale washed up on the beach over the weekend.
The carcass has been identified as a Sowerby's beaked whale, which is seldom seen in the Thames Estuary, according to HM Coastguard Canvey.
Castle Point Borough Council shared on Facebook: "We are aware of a whale sadly deceased on the beach on Canvey Island. The council and specialist agencies are managing the recovery process. Public are advised to stay away from the scene."
The beach area has been cordoned off as authorities, including HM Coastguard Canvey and Southend-on-Sea officials, have contacted relevant agencies to manage the removal process.
HM Coastguard Canvey emphasised the importance of staying clear of the area due to potential health hazards from the deceased marine mammal.
Castle Point MP Rebecca said she was deeply saddened by the news:
"It is always very sad to hear that such a magnificent animal has died.
"My office rang DEFRA today and specialist investigators from the Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) are due to carry out an examination on Monday to help establish what happened.
"Thank you to Castle Point Borough Council, and HM Coastguard for their quick response in making the area safe. Please continue to keep a respectful distance while this work is carried out."
