The RSPCA has launched an investigation after an eight foot long reticulated python was found dead in Leigh-on-Sea.

The animal was discovered on marshland by a member of the public on Sunday (December 18) with a pink plastic bag taped around it.

The animal wasn't microchipped.

RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Enola Evans said: ā€œThe circumstances in which this snake was found are suspicious and it’s concerning that its death may have been the result of cruelty.

ā€œThe snake is a reticulated python around seven to eight foot long and of yellow colouring - as part of the snake had been predated it is hard to see what the cause of death could have been but I am treating the matter as suspicious.

"There was predation on the head but no visible injuries further down the body.

ā€œI am investigating this incident and I would like to hear from anyone that may have information in relation to this incident or may have seen anything suspicious in the area.

ā€œI would urge anyone with information which can help my investigation to call me in confidence on 0300 123 8018.

ā€œSadly, we’re starting to see the results of rising costs on pet owners. More animals are coming into our care, more animals are being abandoned, and fewer animals are being rehomed.

ā€œThis is why we have launched our Christmas appeal to help raise funds so we can keep helping animals - and we are urging the public to support us.ā€
