Prosecution for seller of dangerous electric hotplates
Last updated 29th Mar 2025
A supplier has pled guilty at Southend Magistrates after selling three thousand hot plates, that posed a serious risk of burning and electrical shock.
It’s after a customer at a shop in Colchester complained the product didn’t have a UK plug.
It was found Safa Food Limited had not carried out due diligance and hadn’t reacted to a complaint eight months earlier.
The company had to pay close to thirty thousand pounds following ten charges.
Councillor Mark Durham, our Cabinet Member responsible for Essex Trading Standards, said: "There’s a reason why we have electrical safety regulations. Businesses must be vigilant about where they get their products from lest they be responsible for electrocutions and fires.
“The hard work of both Essex Trading Standards and Hillingdon Trading Standards, as well as the eagle-eyed Colchester shopper, has stopped this company from continuing its negligence.”
