£900,000 major refurbishment aims to boost safety and modernise patient care at Broomfield Hospital Intensive Care Unit

A £900,000 investment into Broomfield Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is aiming to modernise patient care and boost safety.

The ICU, which cares for around 75 patients a month, has been redesigned to allow more room for vital equipment around each bed.

The money has been spent on installing ceiling mounted flexible systems that can deliver medical gases to where the patient is. This reduces clutter on the floor and provides more room for staff to deliver care to patients.

Paul Arnold, Critical Care Matron, said: “This increased flexibility allows staff to work closer to patients and deliver day-to-day care more effectively.

“The updated design also reflects how intensive care has evolved, with more patients now awake and involved in their recovery. Improved layouts and adjustable lighting help to create a calmer, more supportive environment for both patients and staff.”

The project took 18 months to complete and was delivered through the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust’s equipment replacement programme.
