Police are liaising with explosive ordnance disposal teams after reports of a small unexploded World War Two munition being found in the River Chelmer, close to Kings Head Walk.
It comes as residents reported seeing divers in the water this morning, clearing out rubbish.
A small cordon has been put in place as a precaution, from the Meadows shopping centre in Chelmsford by the Odeon entrance and towards the High Street.
Police anticipate it being lifted as quickly as possible.
