Pet shelters feel stretched despite more people turning to pets for wellbeing
Over 115,000 dogs and cats were taken into Association of Dogs and Cats Home Shelters last year
The Association of Dogs and Cats Homes says that pet shelters "can't keep up".
They report that they would need 70% more capacity to clear their waiting lists, as ADCH members took in over 115,000 dogs last year.
There are eight member centres in Essex, in locations like Rayleigh, Chelmsford and Basildon.
The Mars State of Pet Homelessness Report 2024 estimates that over 60,000 dogs and 75,000 cats currently live in UK shelters.
Figures from Mars and Calm, say that 87% of pet owners find their pet to improve their mental wellbeing.
A third of people even say that their dog or cat is the "most important" thing in their lives.
We are being urged to adopt our new pets, if we are considering getting one.
Dr Tammie King, Senior Research Manager at Waltham Petcare Science Institute, said that there are "myths around shelter pets."
"I think there are lots of myths around shelter pets, saying they are potentially broken or unhealthy.
"That is not necessarily the case. Often pets are displaced through no fault of their own.
"It is important for people to recognise that it is not a case of getting a better pet if you go elsewhere other than adopting.
"It is important to talk to shelter staff who are incredibly experienced, who know the pets in their care."
She said that there is the "opportunity to change two lives through pet adoption."
"87% of pet owners say their pet has improved their mental wellbeing, and actually nearly 70% of people said pets stop them overthinking and worrying.
"There is something really special about the bond between humans and pets."
Dr King also said that you need to do research if you are "wanting to welcome a pet into your life."
"There are so many pets requiring a second chance that are in shelters at the moment.
"Staff have an amazing breadth of information and knowledge about these pets.
"You might find the pet that is going to complement your family and provide you with good wellbeing."
She encouraged those that want to find out more to visit kinship.
