Two newly upgraded orthopaedic operating theatres are helping shorten the time patients are waiting for surgery.

175 operations and procedures have been completed since the start of November, including shoulder replacements, foot reconstructions and knee replacements.

Following their essential maintenance and upgrading, the theatres expand Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust’s trauma capacity. This allows more procedures to be carried out, including diabetic foot surgery, and means operations can take place at weekends, helping cut delays for inpatients and those needing urgent care.

A new ventilation system creates a highly sterile environment, meaning safer care for patients.

Denise Archer, Main Theatres and Day Unit Manager, said: “It’s great for patients as they experience treatments in an orthopaedic suite with the latest facilities. It will also help reduce waiting times.

“Staff are working in a modern environment, with lower noise levels and improved air flow. The new facilities improve opportunities for teamwork, learning and training - all of which means better care for our patients.”
