In response to road safety demands, a new puffin crossing with traffic lights is set for installation in Ferrers Road, South Woodham Ferrers, Essex.

The crossing, situated near the Asda supermarket, addresses concerns following numerous near misses on the busy road.

Scheduled to begin later this year during the summer school holidays, the project aims to replace the existing zebra crossing.

Local councillor Bob Massey, representing Chetwood and Collingwood, described the current zebra crossing on the 40mph road as "unusual" and has long advocated for the upgrade.

He secured funding through the Chelmsford Local Highways Panel, emphasizing the crossing’s significance for pedestrians accessing the Town Centre.

Massey noted the frequent near misses, stating, "I am pleased to have secured this upgrade, hopefully before anyone is seriously injured."

Essex Highways expressed commitment to road safety, with spokesperson affirming the new puffin crossing will enhance security for pedestrians.

This puffin crossing allows pedestrians control by pressing a button to signal crossing.

Located near Hamilton Court, home to 43 retirement flats, and a busy roundabout linking to Inchbonnie Road, the update is considered crucial for improving road safety.
