Mixed feelings over plans to build 400 homes north of Colchester
It may be part of the council's goal for over 20,000 new homes
Residents of a small Essex village have mixed feelings over plans to build 400 new homes on farmland. Land in Eight Ash Green, which is just north of Colchester, is being eyed up by developers, who plan to build 399 homes in two separate developments.
The latest plan for the village includes 149 homes near Halstead Road and The Rise, with Bellway Homes, unveiling the initial proposals. The plans include a range of homes including one, two, three and four properties, as well as a small new junction for cars from Halstead Road.
It comes after proposals for 250 homes, also near Halstead Road, were agreed in March. Residents say while it’s “controversial” there is a “huge unmet need” for housing.
Bob Browne, 61, said: “It’s a hard balancing act, I think. While I understand people’s concerns and anger about new homes and the building, so many people and families need homes. I feel for younger people who just can’t get on the housing ladder.” He recalled “countless” people he knows who are “desperate” for their own home.
The plans for 250 homes by James French And Phillip French include 30 per cent affordable housing and public open space. There is expected to be 75 affordable homes, with affordable rent and affordable homeownership. There will also be various financial contributions towards services including £160,000 for NHS services in the area.
It comes as Colchester City Council is planning more than 20,000 new homes. It’s part of the local authorities local plan which covers planning and regeneration from 2025 to 2041, with up to 1,300 new homes per year.
