Essex County Council has pledged to look at where a pensioner was knocked down on a pedestrian crossing at a junction that ‘many drivers simply don’t understand’.

The man was crossing the crossing on Moulsham Street at the junction of Queen Street when the accident happened at about 2.15pm, leaving him with potentially serious leg injuries.

The man was taken to Broomfield Hospital after the incident, which happened at the junction of Queen Street and St. John’s Road, and is one that causes a “significant amount of anxiety” to local residents over its safety, the county council heard.

Essex County Councillor David Loxton said many drivers do not understand how the junction is supposed to operate.

He told Full Council on December 11: “The crossing is at the junction of Queen Street and St. John’s Road, and it’s one that causes a huge amount of anxiety to local residents over its safety.

“The roads here are very busy at peak times.

“Close by we have the college and many schools and nurseries.

It’s obvious if you stand and watch the traffic there that many drivers simply don’t understand how the junction is supposed to work, and this creates a dangerous situation.

“Since the accident, I’ve submitted several maintenance requests to Essex Highways to repaint lines and cut back vegetation that obscures signs and the beacon.

“I’ve also asked for professional advice from Essex Highways on what could be done, funds allowing, to improve the junction and safety at this crossing.

“On behalf of local residents, I ask that the cabinet member for highways ensures that due priority is given to improving this area to make it safer for pedestrians and road users.”

Cabinet member for highways, Councillor Tom Cunningham, said: “As you appreciate, we have to compile all evidence relating to the accident and assess it through that evidence, but I will certainly look into it.

“We will certainly prioritise response, and if necessary, I will be very happy to join him on a site visit so I can see for myself.”

An Essex police spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of a collision in Moulsham Street, Chelmsford, at around 2.20pm on November 28.

“It involved a car and a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a man, sustained potentially serious leg injuries.”

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “We were called at 2.15pm on Friday 28 November to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Moulsham Street in Chelmsford. An ambulance was sent to the scene and transported an adult man to Broomfield Hospital for further assessment and treatment.”
