Parents and carers in Essex are urged to protect young children against flu as uptake of the vaccination remains low.

Only 28% of eligible two- and three-year-olds in Essex have received their flu vaccination this season, raising concerns about potential health risks. The free vaccination, provided as a quick nasal spray, is available at local pharmacies and GP practices.

Flu can seriously affect children, sometimes leading to hospitalisation. Vaccinating helps prevent the spread to others, including vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with underlying conditions.

Bhavesh Patel, a community pharmacist in Rayleigh, is advocating for more vaccinations, highlighting the importance of protecting young children. His call aligns with NHS Essex's Super Bodies campaign, supporting parents in managing common winter illnesses.

All children who were two or three years old on 31st August 2026 are eligible for a free NHS flu vaccination, and parents are encouraged to arrange it without waiting for an invitation from a GP.
