Nearly 3 tonnes of cocaine seized at London Gateway Port
Nine suspects arrested and released on bail
A massive haul of 2.9 tonnes of cocaine has been seized as part of a National Crime Agency investigation.
The drugs, with an estimated street value of £232 million, were discovered on Thursday at London Gateway Port in Essex.
Acting on intelligence from the NCA, Border Force officers found the consignment concealed within a shipment of bananas from South America.
Following the discovery, the drugs were removed, and the container was allowed to continue its journey to a destination near Buntingford, Hertfordshire, where it was collected.
Nine men were arrested in connection with the seizure and were later released on bail.
Dave Phillips, NCA's senior investigating officer, stated, "This is a very significant seizure which has deprived the organised crime group behind it of huge profits."
He added, "The NCA will continue to combat the threat of Class A drugs with partners at home, such as Border Force, and further upstream in source and transit countries."
