Brave Olive expresses gratitude with gifts after playground accident
A five-year-old from Hockley has shown her appreciation to Essex firefighters who came to her aid following a serious playground accident.
Olive Cook-Taylor was on a roundabout at a park near Elizabeth Close, leading to a severe injury where she lost some of her fingertips.
Firefighters at the scene quickly searched the area, found her fingertips, and rushed them to Southend Hospital on blue lights, ensuring they were kept in a bag of ice.
Following her initial treatment at Southend Hospital, Olive was transferred to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, where surgeons managed to reattach her fingertips successfully.
Eight weeks after the accident, Olive visited the team at Rayleigh Weir Fire Station with her family, thanking the Red Watch firefighters with paintings and receiving a Certificate of Bravery for her courage.
During the visit, Olive and her brother Freddie were given a tour of the station and received gifts donated by Smyths Toys at Rayleigh Weir.
Olive’s mum, Linda, reflected on the ordeal, saying: “Everything happened so quickly, and while Olive was being taken to hospital, the firefighters were doing everything they could to help.
“We’re incredibly grateful for what they did that day. Their determination and care meant so much to us as a family.
“It’s amazing to see how well Olive is recovering. She’s been so brave.”
Dave Walpole, Group Manager at Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, acknowledged the efforts, saying: “Our firefighters showed great professionalism, determination, and care in supporting Olive and her family.”
The day was also memorable for Watch Manager Dave Taylor, who added: “It was wonderful to welcome Olive to the station and see how well she is doing.”
The firefighters who assisted on the day were Watch Manager Dave Taylor, Crew Manager Dale Perry, and firefighters Lee Blackwell, Ben Pullen, Katie Sharp, Tony Mills, and Nicola Roe.
As Olive continues her recovery, she is back enjoying her majorettes classes at Westerings Primary Academy.
