Hashtag United, a semi-professional football club based in Essex, has requested to be relegated from the Isthmian League Premier Division.

The club, established by YouTuber Spencer Owen in 2016, has formally submitted a request to move down from Step 3 in the non-league system.

Currently sitting in 19th place, Hashtag United is one spot above the relegation zone.

"The players were informed at the earliest opportunity, allowing them to make decisions about their futures before the registration deadline," the club said in a statement.

Hashtag United emphasised that they are not cutting their budget or releasing any players who wish to remain with the club. Instead, they aim to avoid finishing in the bottom four and make the move an administrative decision.

Hashtag United began as a social media project, growing its audience via YouTube before joining the non-league system in 2018. The club has achieved three promotions since entering the league.

"Relegation is a dirty word in football, and rightly so. It typically leads to loss of jobs and dark times. We are the exception to this rule.

"Moving to Step 4 will mean significant budgetary savings that will be reinvested into other key parts of the business at a crucial time, including employing more people while we significantly invest in building home attendances at our new ground.

"This could be the best thing that ever happened to us, at the perfect time.

In 2020, Hashtag United started a women's team, which now competes in the third tier of English football.
