At just ten years old, Skye from Essex faced a rare childhood cancer diagnosis called Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

She successfully completed her treatment last year, and rang the end-of-treatment bell.

Now, at 13, she is taking part in the RBC Race for the Kids with her mum and her brother.

She says that it is going to "feel amazing" when they cross the finish line at the event.

The family is raising money for Great Ormond Street's Children's Cancer Centre, which will cost the charity £300million to build. They say it will help thousands of children like Skye.

We spoke to Skye and Christina, who told us that they are excited to participate in the race.

Christina said that Great Ormond Street "have helped Skye so much throughout the last three years and saved her life, so we're just trying to pay them back in any way we can."

Skye was diagnosed in 2021, and she told us her experience.

"I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in 2021, and it all started when I had pneumonia. So we went to hospital, and then throughout all the blood tests we worked out that I had leukaemia.

"That's where my treatment started. It was around three years, loads of different cycles of really intense chemotherapy.

"They were all really strong to be honest, loads of infections unfortunately because of my low immunity as well.

"But after a very long battle that was really tricky, I rang the bell and I got to ring the ball at my party that I had to celebrate at my local hospital and at Great Ormond Street.

"It is amazing to be back in remission now because I can go back to seeing my friends and living life to the fullest. It is very nice."

Skye on her last chemotherapy day

Skye told us that when she rang the bell is was "quite a big moment."

"It was really quite emotional for everybody as well because it was such a big moment, and I know that I have been through so much before.

"It just felt like a big relief, and it felt like normality again."

Christina said that Great Ormond Street were "incredibly supportive."

"They are all so professional, and as soon as we walk through the doors we feel safe, because they are the best doctors and nurses around.

"Although the treatment was horrific, I knew it was the best treatment available to Skye.

"They have been absolutely incredible all the way through."

RBC Race for the Kids

Christina said that they are "really excited" about participating in the 5 kilometre race.

Skye is running alongside her mum, brother and four of their friends.

"We are trying to raise money for the new cancer centre. Great Ormond Street have helped Skye through so much."

Skye told us that it will "feel amazing" to cross the finish line:

"We know we're doing something really good for lots of children that have had a similar experience to me, and putting all the money that we have raised towards the new Children's Cancer Centre is just so special to us."

"It is going to be emotional, but amazing at the same time."
