Southend City Council will be offering a new free bulky waste collection service.

From October 28th residents can book online to have items like old sofas collected.

One of the goals for this new service is to reduce fly tipping.

Councillor Lydia Hyde, Cabinet member for Climate, Environment and Waste, said:

"We want to build a city that we could be proud of, that we want to clean up our streets, and we want to see the back of fly tipping.

"So I encourage everyone that wants to get rid of their bulky waste to look up this new free bulky waste service and use it."

In interview with Greatest Hits Radio Essex, she also said:

"What this will do for the first time for South End residents is allow them to go on book online or call our waste line and book that collection so that they can get rid of those bulkier items.

"So for people that for example, they've got a new sofa, they've switched out their fridge or their washing machine, these sorts of items, we will come and collect and the benefit of doing that is that we can responsibly dispose or potentially reuse those items rather than, unfortunately, where some people may be tempted to fly tip.

"And that's really our motivation, we're trying to give people the the correct, responsible way to do so and not do the irresponsible thing of fly tipping."
