Cllr Lesley Scott-Boutell, former Mayor of Colchester, is helping to spearhead Compassionate Communities, and says that there are many "unsung heroes" in the city.

The movement aims to bring people together to recognise the positivity in Colchester.

She said that positive experiences can improve people's quality of life, and that "Colchester is actually a kind city."

"There are so many unsung heroes, it's in their DNA, they are kind, they are compassionate, and it is nice to be able to recognise them.

"It just makes Colchester an even better place to live.

"We need a little bit of fun, you know, it is nice to recognise, and it's nice to take the situation seriously, but actually lets have fun and celebrate it.

"I think it is really important that we acknowledge these people because they're just rays of sunshine."

Nominations are open for the "Compassionate Champions" award.
