Fire crews continue to tackle recycling centre blaze
Crews work overnight to manage smoke and protect nearby businesses
Firefighters continue to battle a significant fire at a recycling centre in East Tilbury.
Crews were called to the site at 11:30pm on the 8th August, discovering approximately 4,000 tonnes of scrap metal ablaze.
Efforts are ongoing to encircle the fire and secure nearby structures.
By 6am on the 9th August, the number of firefighters dealing with the fire increased to 40.
They have been collaborating with site staff using heavy machinery to dismantle around 1,000 tonnes of scrap metal involved in the fire to extinguish it systematically.
Group Manager Scott Ford stated: “Thanks to the site staff for their help throughout the night to pull the pile apart so we can extinguish the fire in sections. We’ve had a difficult water supply at the scene.
“We’re making steady progress to put the fire out and that is creating lots of smoke this morning.
“If you live nearby and are affected by the smoke, please close your windows and doors.”
By 6:30pm, around 25 firefighters remained at the scene to continue battling the fire.
They are working to dismantle the pile of scrap metal to extinguish the fire in sections.
Group Manager Steve Wintrip expressed gratitude to local businesses and communities for their patience during the incident.
“We expect to be here overnight and that might disrupt some businesses getting to work tomorrow so please allow extra travel time and thanks for your patience."
“Crews have worked brilliantly today in rather warm temperatures with the site staff to help bring this incident closer to a safe conclusion.”
The fire is causing smoke in the area, so residents are advised to follow guidance given by the fire service.
