Fire involving 200 tonnes of waste in Pitsea brought under control
Crews tackled the blaze at a waste site off a busy dual carriageway
A large fire involving around 200 tonnes of household waste in Pitsea has been put out.
Crews were called to Archers Fields, where around a third of a waste pile roughly 15 metres high had caught alight.
Firefighters said the fire was extinguished and the scene was safe by 12.05am on Friday 25th September.
At the height of the response, crews worked with site staff to divide the area into sectors and surround the fire.
They used four main jets to bring it under control.
Low smoke drifted across a nearby roundabout and both sides of the dual carriageway during the fire.
Police were asked to help manage traffic in the area.
People living nearby had been urged to keep their doors and windows closed, and drivers were asked to avoid the area where possible.
