Firefighters are currently dealing with a blaze at an industrial unit near the A127 at North Benfleet.
Essex Fire and Rescue say they have eight crews on scene working to extinguish the fire affecting two industrial units.
People living nearby are being told to keep their windows shut because of the smoke.
Station Manager Steve Osborne said: “We’re currently working to extinguish a fire affecting the roof space of two industrial units. We have eight crews working to extinguish the fire in sections as well as using an aerial ladder platform to tackle the fire from above.
"Due to a difficult water supply in the area, we're using a Water Bowser to supply water to the scene"
