Every place 12,000 new homes are set to be built in Colchester
Councillors are to vote on the plans before a public consultation
12,000 new homes are expected to be built across Colchester, a housing plan has revealed. They are new allocations as part of how Colchester City Council will plan, monitor and manage the delivery of more than 20,000 new homes in the city between 2026 and 2043.
Existing commitments – sites with planning permission – total 5,488, Tendring Colchester Borders Garden Community is set to provide 1,875, a windfall allowance will provide 2,985 and local plan allocations 12,208.
Councillors are to vote to give the go ahead for the plan to proceed to six-weeks’ formal public consultation in line with Regulation 19 of the statutory plan-making process at a meeting on August 26. It is the last stage before it heads off to the Government for examination.
A statement said: “Over the plan period, the city will face many challenges, such as population growth and change, the climate emergency, evolving economic trends and the need for more sustainable and active travel opportunities. The Local Plan seeks to address these challenges to deliver the level of growth required to meet the needs of current and future generations whilst also protecting and enhancing the environment and people’s quality of life.”
The Colchester City Council Local Plan 2017 to 2033 – adopted in 2022 – set a target of 920 new homes per year, totalling a minimum of 18,400 new homes across the plan period.
A statement as part of regulation 19 documents added: “Growth in Colchester is inevitable and brings with it change and opportunity. The Local Plan will embrace growth opportunities to meet the environmental, social and economic needs of the changing population and future generations.
“In doing so it will improve the quality of life for our communities, create a better environment and contribute to healthy lifestyles, by maximising the opportunities provided through well connected green networks. The Plan will also preserve and enhance Colchester’s identity defined by its special diverse natural environment, green networks and waterways, prestigious heritage, varied arts and culture, and welcoming inclusive, vibrant and healthy communities.”
