Anthony Canty, a EuroMillions winner and key worker known for saving a police officer’s life during the Covid-19 lockdown, has tragically died following a suspected hit-and-run collision in Tiptree, Essex.

The incident occurred around 6.30am on 21st May on Maldon Road, involving a collision between Mr Canty, cycling at the time, and a black Ford Ka.

Mr Canty was subsequently taken to hospital but died four days later, Essex Police confirmed.

Just weeks before winning £1 million in May 2020, Canty had performed CPR on a police officer who suffered a heart attack on a bus in April during the lockdown period.

After the officer's collapse, he was airlifted to hospital and stayed in intensive care for five days, during which Canty kept in touch with the officer's family and offered support.

An 18-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the crash, under investigation for causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving under the influence, and failing to stop at the scene.

Essex Police are appealing for information regarding the collision and are seeking any footage that might include the black Ford Ka around the time of the incident.

Anyone with relevant information or footage is urged to contact police, quoting incident reference 174 of 21st May.
