Burnham-On-Crouch site to see storage buildings replaced
The Maltings Storage Shed in Burnham-On-Crouch is set for a significant transformation as plans to replace the current "eyesore" storage buildings with new homes and a boat shed have been approved.
The redevelopment scheme, proposed by R J Prior and Son Burnham Limited, involves demolishing the existing dilapidated sheds and constructing seven new homes along with a boat storage shed on the riverfront site.
The decision was made during a meeting at Maldon District Council's south eastern area planning committee. Councillors reviewed the proposal on Wednesday, 24th June.
The planning officer explained to the committee that the development adopts a "modern and contemporary approach", noting its potential impact on the conservation area due to its prominence and location. The council’s conservation officer commented that the development would cause less than substantial harm to the conservation area.
Independent councillor Linda Haywood raised concerns about the proposed parking arrangements, suggesting the area would be overcrowded with cars. Additionally, she questioned the effectiveness of garages under each home, asserting they would go unused.
The approved plans feature two- and three-bedroom terraced homes, including gable roofs and second-floor balconies. The new boat storage building will accommodate seven boats and be positioned in the western part of the site.
The development will see the removal of two large storage buildings with curved roofs and clad in red corrugated iron sheets.
A representative from the developer described the project as a "win-win" for the area, with high-quality housing demand being met and aesthetically pleasing developments replacing the current buildings.
