Motorcyclists in Essex can access free training to enhance their road safety skills through the FireBike initiative, organised by Essex Police's Road Safety Team in collaboration with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.

Recognising motorcyclists as vulnerable road users, the FireBike programme aims to equip riders with essential skills, awareness, and confidence for safer journeys across the county.

Since its inception in 2023, the initiative has supported nearly 100 courses, focusing on reducing collision risks through skill development.

Course Details

The FireBike training involves a half-day session led by qualified trainers, offering practical riding advice and guidance on road safety issues.

Riders can improve hazard perception, road positioning, overtaking decisions, and responses to changing road and weather conditions.

A key element is the observed ride, where police motorcyclists accompany participants, providing personalised feedback.

Benefits and Accessibility

PC Mike Bignell highlighted the course's supportive environment, stating that participants receive practical advice on riding, complemented by feedback on observation, positioning, hazard perception, and overtaking.

The training is free, with sessions held at weekends from March to November, accommodating work or other commitments.

Upon completion, riders receive a certificate of attendance, acknowledging their dedication to safe riding.

Interested motorcyclists can find additional course information and register via the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service website.
