Essex Fire and Rescue has issued a plea to drivers to be cautious and reduce their speed as road risks increase this Christmas.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Chris Else emphasised the importance of driving safely during this period, especially as darker evenings, adverse weather, and challenging road conditions could lead to accidents.

Chris said, “Slow down. I think that’s the most important message anyone can do when you’re driving. Think about your speed and slow down as much as possible. Drive to the conditions that you’re in and make sure you take other road users into account when you’re driving.”

Figures from the Safer Essex Roads Partnership show that 31 lives were lost on Essex roads by mid-2025, marking a concerning rise compared to 19 deaths during the same period in 2024. In the 12 months to October 2025, fatalities increased by 38.6% compared with the previous year, according to data from the Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner for Essex (PFCC).

The festive season has previously seen high numbers of traffic collisions, with Essex Police recording seven fatal collisions in December 2024.

With stopping distances longer and visibility often reduced in winter, Essex Fire and Rescue is urging people behind the wheel to drive attentively and responsibly, ensuring they account for weather conditions and other road users.

Chris highlighted how crucial it is to adapt driving behaviour during this time, noting the risks posed by frost, rain, and limited daylight.

Drivers are encouraged to take extra care on Essex roads this season to help prevent further tragedies.
