The Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner has responded to public concerns regarding policing following the death of Henry Nowak.

The Commissioner highlighted the dignity displayed by Nowak’s family and friends amidst their anguish.

Acknowledging the family's connections to Essex, he noted the heightened impact on the community.

He stressed respect for Henry's father's request that his son's death does not incite division.

While unable to comment on police conduct in the specific case, the Commissioner affirmed his commitment to assuring fairness, accountability, and confidence in Essex policing.

He emphasised that police officers in Essex vow to uphold integrity, fairness, and impartiality, which is reinforced by the Chief Constable.

The training and professionalism of Essex Police are overseen by the Chief Constable, whom the Commissioner holds accountable for officer conduct.

An update received last week confirmed Essex Police's policy to treat everyone equally.

Both the Commissioner and the Chief Constable oppose two-tier policing, advocating equality under the law.

Public trust, they argue, is founded on fairness and procedural justice.

The Commissioner underlined the police's duty to protect the public, support victims, and uphold justice based on evidence and law.

He invites further discussions on policing confidence and two-tier policing at the Police, Fire and Crime Panel, where representation from the Council is available.

The goal remains to ensure Essex Police operate professionally, with any lapses addressed by the Chief Constable.

The Commissioner assured continuous accountability to maintain high standards expected by Essex residents.
