An elderly Essex cat, Louly, has gained recognition as Cats Protection’s oldest cat in care, just in time for the annual Mature Moggies Day on 16th June.

Louly, nearing her 20th birthday this August, is set to be the poster girl for the event, which celebrates cats aged 11 years and older, often overlooked in favour of younger cats.

Louly was brought into care at Cats Protection Rayleigh, Castle Point & District after her previous owner had to move and couldn't take her along.

Her owner was comforted by the knowledge that Louly would be looked after in foster care as a suitable new home was sought.

Although she will soon be 20, equivalent to 96 in human years, Louly continues to impress with her health and playful spirit.

Louly's fosterer, Mel Catmore, describes her as a charming and affectionate cat requiring a peaceful home where she can unwind and be the sole pet, with ideally a secure garden to enjoy.

Mel Catmore said: “Louly has only grown more charming with age. She is a hugely affectionate cat who enjoys being the centre of attention. She’s an absolute delight to be around – and she has even learned to give high fives!”

Despite advancements in veterinary care improving cats' lifespans beyond the average 11.7 years, Cats Protection noticed that older cats wait three times longer to be adopted compared to younger ones.

Daniel Warren-Cummings, Senior Behaviour Engagement Manager at Cats Protection, commented on the diversity among mature cats and the many who could be new pets.

Daniel Warren-Cummings said: “Mature moggies are just as wonderfully varied as their younger counterparts. Some older felines still love to play, whilst others enjoy the snoozy peaceful lifestyle."

According to Cats Protection's CATS (Cats And Their Stats) Report 2025, of all cats acquired in the past year, only 16% were adopted.

This statistic inspired the charity's summer campaign to encourage adoption over purchasing cats.
