Prosecutors are considering whether a driver accused of failing to stop at the scene of a crash which killed two children who were riding an e-scooter in Pitsea will face "more serious charges", a court has heard.

Roman Casselden, 16, and his nine-year-old sister Darcie Casselden were pronounced dead at the scene in Ashlyns, Pitsea, Essex, on February 1 last year.

Deimante Ziobryte, 21, of Benfleet, is charged with being the driver of a car which failed to stop after a road accident.

She did not attend today's hearing at Basildon Magistrates' Court, which District Judge Christopher Williams said was held to comply with time limits in summary-only cases.

"I gather that there are ongoing investigations and consideration is being given to whether more serious charges arise," he said.

Prosecutors said they were awaiting a forensic report.

The judge adjourned the case until a further hearing at Basildon Magistrates' Court on March 6, "so the CPS can have the report and decide what's going to happen after that".

An inquest into the two deaths, which was opened and suspended last year pending the outcome of the police investigation, heard that both siblings died of traumatic head injury.

Essex area coroner Michelle Brown, who opened the inquests separately in Chelmsford in February, said the pair had been "travelling on an e-scooter" which was "involved in a collision with a motor vehicle that was travelling east along Ashlyns approaching Stokefelde".

The coroner said emergency services attended and Darcie was pronounced dead at 7.10pm and Roman at 7.50pm.

The coroner gave the provisional cause of death for each child as "traumatic head injury pending further investigation".

She said Roman and Darcie were "very young" and the case had "very tragic circumstances".

The children's mother Emma said in a statement released through police that "their love, kindness and spirit live on in the hearts of all who knew them".

Ziobryte remains on bail.
