A driver, speeding at 140mph, has been stopped and had their car seized in Takeley.

Roads Policing Unit (RPU) officers were conducting speed checks in on the A120 in Takeley on Saturday 4 January, when they captured a car travelling at 140mph.

Officers followed the driver and, caught up with the car near Stansted Airport.

As police spoke to the driver, they noticed the illegal tinted front windows.

The car was seized under anti-social driving legislation where the manner of driving is inconsiderate, careless or dangerous and puts other road users at risk.

The driver has been reported for speeding and dangerous condition of the car as the tinted windows fell below 30% visibility.

Adam Pipe, Head of Roads Policing, said:

“Speeding is totally unacceptable and speeds at this level are irresponsible – they could potentially result in a fatal collision.

The higher the speed, the less time you have to react to the road conditions and other road users and there is a much shorter braking distance, all of which is covered in the Highway Code when you learn to drive.

To ignore the speed limit, is to your detriment. It’s illegal and we will take action against any driver who doesn’t observe the limit.”
