Dozens of newly planted trees have been destroyed, causing anger across an Essex town. The new trees were planted at the John Cox Recreational Ground, near Ferrers Road, in South Woodham Ferrers, by the town council. Residents and volunteers joined together for the community project.

The town council expressed “great disappointment” that the efforts were “undone” by the vandalism. A spokesman said: “The Town Council is aware of the situation and will take appropriate steps to address and resolve the matter.

“It is deeply regrettable that acts of this nature undermine the positive work being carried out to enhance our town for the benefit of the community.”

The town council is responsible for several open spaces, including the John Cox Recreational Ground. Part of the grounds included a biking track.

Residents posted online about their anger at the vandalism. One posted: “Incredibly disappointing. So much hard work went into this effort to make our town a bit better. I hope anyone who knows anyone who did this comes forward to the authorities.”
