Dovercourt seafront sees transformation as regeneration efforts accelerate

Efforts to rejuvenate Dovercourt’s seafront have reached a significant milestone as a major phase of improvement works has been completed.
Funded by the Government's High Street Accelerator Green Spaces project, enhancements include refreshed coastal pathways, newly installed wayfinding signs, and upgraded amenities around the Queen Victoria statue with painted railings and a new seating area.
The marble sculpture on Marine Parade, which has been a prominent feature for over 100 years, has received a deep clean and will soon be illuminated at night to draw attention to the seafront's centrepiece.
Paul Milsom, Chairman of the High Street Accelerator Partnership, expressed optimism about the project's impact: "This funding has already made a big difference to Dovercourt Town Centre, and I know these latest works will create stronger links between the town centre and seafront which will benefit residents, visitors and businesses."
The High Street Accelerator project is led by local partners with support from Tendring District Council (TDC). Previously, funds were allocated to enhance town centre shopfronts, a new website, upgraded CCTV, and banners to give the town a distinct identity.
During the seafront works, TDC chose to permanently close certain cliff pathways that were deemed unsafe, though several routes remain open for access to the beach and promenade.
Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth, Regeneration and Tourism at TDC Ivan Henderson praised the developments: “These works are a vital part of the regeneration of Dovercourt town centre and the improvements to the seafront are fantastic."
Contributions from Community Voluntary Services Tendring (CVST) have further enhanced the town's look with colourful planters. Tracy Lawrie, Communities Manager at CVST, said, "We have been working on initiatives like the town centre planters with the High-Street Accelerator Partnership and are pleased to see improvements."
CVST continues the High Street Heroes project, inviting volunteers to maintain town planters and conduct litter picks, with contact details available at their hub.
The finishing touches on the seafront works will be completed in the coming weeks, aligning with broader plans to regenerate Dovercourt Town Centre. This includes Essex County Council’s public realm scheme at Kingsway.
TDC is also undertaking ventures to build new homes on Victoria Street and establish a modern car park on Milton Road.
