A 26-year-old man has admitted charges connected to the discovery of 37 dogs’ remains in Billericay following an investigation by the Basildon Neighbourhood Policing Team.

Oaveed Rahman, of Hope Road, Crays Hill, appeared at Basildon Crown Court today where he pleaded guilty to 11 counts of fraud by false representation and one count of causing unnecessary suffering to animals.

The suffering charge relates to 21 dogs and a cat.

Officers from the Basildon Neighbourhood Policing Team, alongside the RSPCA and Basildon Council, began investigating in May 2025 after receiving reports about an address in Crays Hill.

During a thorough search of the property and its grounds, the remains of 37 dogs were uncovered, along with a number of live dogs, which were seized.

Inspector Steve Parry, who leads the Basildon Neighbourhood Policing Team, said the investigation had “caused a significant amount of concern within our local community” and addressed strong feelings from those wanting answers.

Rahman was found to have defrauded members of his community by taking money to care for these animals, while subjecting them to what Parry described as “abhorrent” treatment.

Speaking about the investigation, Parry said:

“My team’s investigation has left Oaveed Rahman with no option but to admit the offences against him.

“He has been on remand since his arrest and now faces a real prospect of a prison sentence.

“I would like to thank everyone who has shared vital information. Your help has been invaluable and has enabled us to build this case and, ultimately, secure this conviction.”

Rahman’s sentencing is scheduled for 20th February 2026 at Basildon Crown Court.
