Businesses are being challenged if they're caught taking trade waste to local recycling centres.

Inspectors are checking all twenty-one sites in the county after bosses said firms have been dodging their own disposal costs.

Essex County Council says it's an unfair cost to taxpayers, and wants to protect the service for households. They say the recycling centres do not have permits to accept trade waste.

Councillor Christopher Benn, Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling, said: “Unfortunately, there is still a large amount of trade waste being disposed of at recycling centres across the county."

“Trade waste is a cost that should be accounted for by the business. When trade waste is taken to a recycling centre, this is at a cost to Essex taxpayers."

“This is an unfair situation, and I am here to fight for the residents of Essex and their interests."

“The team are working hard to tackle this issue across our sites and improve the experience for customers dropping off their household waste.”
