Consultant from Basildon honoured for global radiology training initiative
Dr Sami Ullah Khan's platform has transformed learning in radiology across 131 countries
Dr Sami Ullah Khan, a consultant at Basildon University Hospital, has received the Royal College of Radiologists Gold Medal for his outstanding contribution to radiology education.
The Gold Medal is the highest accolade given to a Fellow of the College. Dr Khan was recognised for his commitment to radiology training, particularly through his free online platform, Dr Khan's Teaching (DKT), which he launched in 2020.
DKT offers worldwide access to radiology learning materials, assisting doctors in preparing for the Royal College of Radiologists examinations and helping international radiologists earn qualifications to integrate into the NHS. By July 2026, the platform had amassed 15,395 members from 131 countries and delivered 1,245 hours of teaching to over 174,000 attendees globally. Many volunteer contributors are based at Basildon, Broomfield, and Southend hospitals.
Royal College of Radiologists President Dr Stephen Harden praised DKT's transformative impact on global radiology training and recognised Dr Khan's esteemed reputation among trainees and radiologists worldwide.
Dr Khan, originally trained in Pakistan, has more than 34 years of experience in clinical practice and educational initiatives. He expressed his gratitude for the prestigious award, stating: "I am deeply honoured to receive the RCR Gold Medal. Teaching has always been a passion of mine, and it has been a privilege to support radiology trainees throughout their careers."
Dr Maimuna Mushabe, Interim Hospital Chief Executive at Basildon University Hospital, acknowledged Dr Khan's significant contributions to radiology through his clinical work, leadership, and dedication to education. She stated: "This award is a well-deserved recognition of everything he has achieved, and we are proud to celebrate this special moment with him."
